Server auctions explained: buying used dedicated servers
How provider auctions like Hetzner’s work, why prices fall over time, what to watch out for, and the cheapest auction servers in stock now.

Some providers resell servers that previous customers returned. On Hetzner’s Server Auction the price of each machine drops step by step until someone rents it, there is no setup fee, and you can cancel monthly. Machines appear and disappear all day, so the best deals are short-lived.
Good to know
- The hardware is older, often a few CPU generations behind. Per core it is still hard to beat.
- Disks are used. Check the disk type and plan for RAID and backups as you would anyway.
- Each listing is one machine. When it is gone, it is gone. Ordering quickly matters more than on regular plans.
